This ceramic drum has it's origin from Egypt and North East Africa. Each drum is laboriously hand crafted not thrown on a wheel like most other instruments like it. The body of this drum rings like a bell after first firing or it is destroyed. The quality of a ceramic drum is dependant on the body of the drum. With quality comes extra expense and these drums are priced accordingly. We make 3 bodies for every one drum produced, sometimes we get lucky and get it perfect the first time. As anyone who has worked with clay knows, things change when tried by fire!!! We will also add any design or other symbols you desire. Prices vary but a 10" ceramic drum runs about $200 plus S&H.
This African, Bantu drum is similar to an Ashiko style drum. This model is mechanically tuned, which is far superior to cord tuned varieties. This drum is available trimmed in authentic handwoven Kinte cloth or other similar material. The drum pictured above has the trim removed to show the hardware which is completely hidden by the trim. It is available in 6",8", and 10" diameters and the standard height is approximately 4.5 X dia. of the head. The prices are very reasonable at: 6"-$150, 8"-$200, 10"-$280 plus S&H.(This drum is also available in kit form with detailed instructions for 1/2 the price of a finished drum)
